So you got laid-off or worse, fired, and you are job hunting like a crazy person and you hear this “sorry we cannot hire you – you are unemployed” – yikes! The truth is that some companies only want to hire workers that are employed already.

My tips:

1. If you have done any type of independent consulting or volunteer work make sure it is on your resume.  This shows you are currently working and keeping your skill set fresh.
2. Use LinkedIn as a networking tool to get your résumé into a hand of a human at the company.
3. Create a website about you – include your résumé and contact information – mine as an example.  If you blog – make sure you keep it positive and about your field.
4. Hand out business cards everywhere you go!  If you have a Staples nearby you can get your card made fairly inexpensively AND they are ready within 24 hours for pick up.  Highly recommend using their services.
